I was recently asked how someone like Lance Armstrong cultivates such a burning desire so that no matter what, he’ll face any challenge to achieve his goal. This question made me wonder what drives certain people to achieve great heights, and I can sum it up in one word Hungry.

Hungry for the outcome
Hungry for the challenge
Hungry for the fight

Just plain Hungry

I looked up the word hungry in the dictionary and found the following definition.

hun·gry
adj. hun·gri·er, hun·gri·est

  1. Experiencing a desire or need for food.
  2. Extremely desirous; avid: hungry for recognition.

Let’s look closely at experiencing desire or need. Three quarters of the people that approach me say they have no burning desire, no motivation.  To this I ask,  “What is it that you want in life?”  “What are your desired outcomes?”  Interestingly none of these people could give me a clear, concise answer.

Can you imagine driving down the road in your car your windshield caked with dirt, grime, soot and bug splatter? How can you get anywhere? How will you know where you are going, you can’t see 1 inch in front of your face? Of course there is fear! Of course there is overwhelm! Your mind starts to wander and you begin to imagine things. You imagine smashing into a tree, hitting a pedestrian, taking out a bus-stop and you brain vividly pictures this! If you let your imagination run wild chances are you will create the outcome you are trying to avoid. You are being overcautious and apprehensive in every move because you can’t SEE where you’re going you can only see where you don’t want to go.

Step 1: Clear Picture

We’ve all heard it; you have to have a Clear Picture of where you’re going.  The question is why?

Your brain cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is vividly imagined.

YOU MUST be able to see your outcome! It must be clear, easily articulated, and it must be able to roll off the tip of your tongue.

The first step of getting anything you want in life is a matter of being clear about who you are.

If you have a clear picture of where you’re going then procrastination, fear, overwhelm, intimidation, frustration, lack of money, etc are merely tiny speed bumps on the way to success. They never stop you. If you find yourself being stopped by any of these speed bumps the solution is simple: You have to clarify the picture, it is big enough in your mind, it isn’t defined enough to visualize.  You need to increase and clarify the image of your dream 10X, only then will your unbridled desire will kick in!

Step 2: Know What You Are Here For

Knowing what you’re here for is as important to cultivating your burning desire as your need to breathe to keep you alive. You MUST know what you’re here for, why you are alive. If you answer, I’m here to work, pay bills, bring up a family and live happily ever after, you have another think coming! People who answer in this way and truly believe that this is the purpose of their existence don’t read information like this article and they never seek to improve themselves or their results. These people are happy and complacent with just “being”. Kings of Mediocrity!

I believe that if you are reading this article, you are meant for far greater duties than you are currently performing. You are not doomed to live in mediocrity, you are intended to live in excellence and you have a HUGE responsibility to rise to this intention.

I hope it excites you to know that by merely having the interest and awareness personal advancement puts you in the TOP 10% of everyone around, you must not take that responsibility lightly.

Step 3: Whatever You Are Dreaming Right Now, It’s Not Big Enough!

Pull out a pen and paper and write down what you have been working towards for the past 5 years.  For example, you may have been working towards becoming healthy, buying a house, giving back to the community, making more money or a multitude of other goals.

On a scale from 0-10 rate your emotional intensity for each item in your list.  0 being you don’t want it and 10 being a feeling of complete exhilaration, such an amazing feeling that time ceases to exist.

Great!

Now imagine each item on your list 10X bigger, being achieved 10X faster, 10X more efficiently. Really get into it, there are no limits, make it HUGE, make the outcome so large that if it happens, it will be breathtaking.

Good!

Now think about this again and re-rate your emotional intensity using the 0-10 scale. 0 being you don’t want it and 10 being a feeling of complete exhilaration, such an amazing feeling that time ceases to exist.

Did your intensity of feeling increase? If it didn’t then you are not on track with what you want in your life, or you have not created enough of the Clear Picture yet!

Fear, frustration, confusion, overwhelm, fear of success and fear of failure are all results of your internal “stuff” that is holding you back.  This is exactly the same as the muck on your windshield while you’re driving in the car of life. Step 4: Keep Your Dream In The Forefront Of Your Mind

Life happens; you’re late for work, there is a traffic jam, you and your spouse are not getting along, the children are misbehaving and so on. You MUST keep your dream in front of you always.

To illustrate some of the techniques to assist in keeping this goal in front of you use the example goal of making more money. Get poster board, and make posters that say, "I make X amount of money daily!" Where X is how much money you want to make.  Put these posters up around your house.  Change your screensaver the same message.  Get some magazines, cut out pictures of places and people you’d be associating with. Cut out pictures of the actions needed to achieve this outcome.  Put these images all over the place. If you work in an office, then alter your office in the same manner. Don't worry about what anyone thinks, and just do it!

Commit to saying “I make X amount of money daily” at least 50 times daily. Constantly ask yourself if the action that you’re performing right now is helping to make X amount of money daily.  Try it! Test this process for 2 weeks by repeating the goal you have committed to and then verifying that the actions you are performing at every given moment are working toward achieving the goal.

I make X amount of money daily!
Is the action that I am currently performing helping me make X amount daily?

Your desire will go through the roof! I guarantee it!

Step 5: Only Associate With Other ‘Hungry” People

In Greece there is a saying, “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are!”

Hungry people attract hungry people. People that like mediocrity associate with other mediocre people. Like attracts like and steel sharpens steel.

To create your burning desire you must surround yourself with people that live with burning desire daily. Observe them to see how they talk about that which they desire, see what they illustrate, what they exemplify. Observe and learn, you’ll be surprised how much of the day they spend talking about, dreaming about, thinking about or reading about their object of desire. It’s amazing! They feed the fire of their desire daily, and they do it by constantly immersing themselves in that desire.

Step 6: Immerse Yourself In The Info – Feed The Fire Of Desire

My brother is a martial artist. He trains with some of the most prominent martial artists on the planet. Over a span of 1 month I observed that at least 95% of our conversation was about martial arts. For example I would ask him how his breakfast was.  He would respond “Oh great – It reminds me about being in china and watching other gui-loes training in the morning.”

I would then wonder, I asked you about your breakfast, how did we suddenly end up in china? This is a good example of someone who has ultimate desire, it permeates his mind daily.

Step 7: Prepare For The Test

I want you to be prepared for this, when you make the commitment and create the burning desire for an outcome you will be tested by your friends, family, life and the universe. YOU WILL BE TESTED! I guarantee it.

I’ve coached innumerable clients and most (if not all) found that when they make a commitment to create a burning desire they get challenged in some form and that this challenge usually presents itself within the first week.

YOU WILL BE TESTED. The test isn’t to decide how good or bad you are at something, it’s there to test your commitment. So when you get tested… and you will…. be aware that it’s just a test. Do what’s needed to do to overcome the challenge and then continue with steps 1 through

Till next time!

Warmly,
Stephan Stavrakis

PS: Do you believe you're as amazing as I do?
