Knowing What Your Are Here For... Print E-mail

How do you discover what you are here for? I am not talking about daily responsibilities, or even long-term goals. I mean the real reason why you are here at all - the very reason you exist.

It's 3:00 in the afternoon the rain is pouring outside, and across the table sits a legend, a prolific innovator of business. He has helped create companies with billions of dollars in sales revenue using employees who had practically no experience and no leadership skills, his name, Albert Koopman. If you haven't heard of him he's the author of 5 management, organizational and success related books, Albert has addressed over 400,000 people on all 5 continents. He has lectured to MBA classes at 27 Universities worldwide, and one of his books, Trans-Cultural Management, forms the basis of several doctorate programs in leading business management schools in the world.

I sat in awe as this man told stories of business and life. I felt the urge to ask him "Mr. Koopman, how does one know what they are here for? How do I discover my life's purpose?" Albert paused... took a sip of his distilled water and looked at me with the same look a wise teacher gives you just before he is going to tell you one of life's most important lessons. The energy he tapped into was out of this world, it sent shivers up and down my spine, I knew what he was about to say was near and dear to his heart. In one sentence he summed up everything as if what he had said was a piece of cake to accomplish

"Sitting On A Rock In The Wind!"

He said, "If you want to discover what you are here for you must sit on a rock in the wind. You must allow your mind to reset!

Do a reset of your beliefs
Do a reset of your doubts
Do a reset of what you're good at
Do a reset of your abilities
Do a reset of your capabilities
Do a reset of all you think is important
Do a reset of your social conditioning
Just do a total mental-reset.

There are many ways of accomplishing a mental-reset. The least complicated method is to allow yourself to think everything through, all the way through...

"Think Everything Through"

We have all heard the term "Think everything through" but do we really know what this means? It means let yourself think about everything, until you can no longer think, until you have run out of thoughts, meanings, doubts, fears and anxieties.

If you sit on a rock in the wind, as Albert so eloquently put it, you allow yourself to contemplate and when you contemplate, you allow your mind to wander. This is always the first step.

Imagine your contemplation being a movie that you have not completed watching because you continuously stop it and put it on pause. How long would it take if you stopped a movie every 5 minutes and did not get back to watching it until 1-2 weeks later? Most likely it would take you years. Your mind works the same way. You must allow the mental movie to play through I promise when the movie is finished your mind will be clear, empty and you will have completed a mental reset. Only then will you allow your true desires and passions to come through, without the doubt, anxiety, or fear.
So how to discover what you are here for? While there are many ways to do this, some of them are fairly involved, the following is one of the simplest that anyone can do. The more open you are to this process and the more you expect it to work, the faster it will work for you. However, not being open to it, having doubts about it, or thinking it's an entirely idiotic and meaningless waste of time won't prevent it from working as long as you stick with it - again, it will just take longer to converge.

Here is what to do:

  1. Allow yourself to think everything through... It might take minutes, hours, or even days; it depends on how much unresolved mental-garbage you have to think through. You must take this step! If that means taking a 10-day vacation to do a mental reset then you must do it.

    1. The place must be quiet

    2. You must release all your have-to's

    3. You must release all your shoulds

    4. You must have no responsibilities, like having to go somewhere or do something
    5. You must have total freedom for the time that you allocate for your mental reset
    6. You must do it until you're "clear"
  2. Only when you feel clear pull out a pen and paper and write at the top, "This is what I'm here for"
  3. Write all the answers that pop into your head. It doesn't have to be complete sentences, words, phrases and incomplete thoughts are fine.
  4. Sit there for as long as it takes, until you write down a statement that you KNOW is what you're here for. You'll know when you cry, sob, or get shivers up and down your spine when you read it. This is what you are here for! Period.

That's it. The sad fact is that most people won't do this, most people don't value themselves as much as they need to in order to discover who they are, and what they are here for.

Take the advice of Albert; give yourself the gift of mental clarity, Sit on a rock in the wind. Moreover, do it for as long as it takes! I believe you're worth it, Do you?

Till next time!

Warmly,
Stephan Stavrakis
