and said "Stephan, I'm totally frustrated, overwhelmed. I have to wake
up, go workout, go to the office, deal with all the stuff from
yesterday, deal with my employees that aren't performing properly, then
field phone calls, emails, letters, and meetings. Etc. Ugh... I am
going crazy! My heart is racing, my thoughts are out of control, I
don't know where I begin and where to end? I don't know what to do
first, my priorities all seem to be a priority what should I do?
HELP...
Working
and living in a life like this is about as fun as getting your teeth
drilled with no Novocain. You don't know where to start, where to go
and what to do.. You're mind races out of control from moment to
moment. And it appears that there is no way out.
Is there a solution? Of course there is!
Step 1: Realize what is setting the TONE (key) for your day!
Last
year I went to Disneyland with my wife and kids, and I remember being
captivated by a group of four gentlemen singing a capella. They sounded
like 4 angels. Before every song one of them would wrap his mouth
around a harmonica blow out a tone that was a queue for all the
singers. The note that preceded every song was the 'KEY' of the song.
It reminded everyone that was singing which "KEY" they had to sing the
song in. This set the "TONE" for the entire song. By using this tone
they all know exactly know what key to sing in therefore the song came
out in perfect harmony. My guess is if they didn't set the tone all the
singers couldn't get it together on the right KEY.
In
a weird sort of way, I realized that in order to create flow and ease
in your day you need a state of mind to set the key, or the tone for
your day.
What sets the "TONE" for your day? What state of mind do you reference all day?
Is it the key of Fun and Excitement? Or Stress and Overwhelm?
Is it the key of Peace and Flow? Or Anxiety and Urgency
Is it the key of Freedom and easy task achievement? Or Feeling stuck and Procrastinating?
Step 2: Chose a tone or key
Just
as the lead singer of the a capella group set the key or tone for the
song, it's time for you to set the key or tone for your day by deciding
what you want it be!
Think of a state of mind you'd like to feel all day.
Is it peace?
Is it excitement?
Is it flow?
Is it Freedom?
Is it Getting Things Done Now easily and effortlessly?
Make
a choice for a state of mind you'd like to have all day, make the
choice in the morning when you are fresh. BEFORE YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR
DAY.
Important side point: Your brain cannot tell the difference between what is real or what is imagined.
If
the above statement is true, then just thinking about what you have to
do today before you chose to set a tone for the day will probably set
the tone for you.
For
example if you're thinking how frustrating it will be to face your
employees. You'll set the tone of frustration and your mind will give
you the feeling of frustration as a tone.
If
you're thinking about all the tasks that will stress you out today.
You'll set the tone of Stress. Guess what, you're brain will give you
the emotion of stress as the tone.
So chose a tone that you think will make your day amazing!! Peace, freedom, flow, action, excitement and or fun!
Step 3: Think of situations in the past that gave you the feeling of the tone you chose in step 2.
Remember
the point above, your brain can't tell the difference between what's
real and what's imagined. Give yourself the gift of vividly imagining a
situation in the past that gave you the feeling that you chose in step
2.
If it's FLOW you want, remember the last time you were totally immersed in the "FLOW STATE"
I
want you to imagine for a moment your most amazing flow day... the day
that you could do nothing wrong. Everything seemed to flow; everyone
was operating around you as if you were all cogs in a meticulously
designed Swiss watch. Everything you touched seemed to turn to gold.
You feel calm, peaceful, focused almost as if you are in tune with
everything and everyone around you...
The
more details you can remember about that day, the more you immerse
yourself into the feeling you had that day. Essentially your
communicating to your mind, "I want to feel like that again right now!"
Your mind is a faithful servant to you if you use it correctly and it
will respond accordingly by giving you all the emotions that you ask
for.
Step 4: Do it until.
You
need to give yourself this mental vacation for as long as it takes
until you feel the emotion that you have chosen at 100%. Don't stop
thinking about the details of that day until you feel 100% in the state
of mind that you had that day. The more you practice the easier you'll
be able to feel that state of mind again.
Only
when you "FEEL" the emotion you want as your tone for the day should
you begin your day. DO NOT! I repeat DO NOT! Embark on your day without
choosing your tone! Otherwise you're tone for the day will be a
reflection of the last frustrated, anxious or overwhelmed bad THOUGHT
you had.
Take control, set your tone, I
guarantee you'll have more amazing day's because you spent that extra
2-3 minutes to chose your emotion for the day!
Till next time
Warmly,
Stephan Stavrakis
PS: Do you believe you're as amazing as I do?
